NEWS: Nitrogen Skid (High Pressure)

Nitrogen gas is a versatile, inert gas that has many uses in industrial applications. It is odourless, colourless, non-toxic, and neither flammable nor explosive. These particular qualities lend it to all manner of tasks.

The many end uses include tyre inflation, laser cutting, power stations, hydrogen plants, fire prevention, pipeline services in chemical/oil and gas industries, power generation such as biomass plants.

As the demand for nitrogen grows, so does having a reliable, available resource. Currently there are many solutions for providing a managed supply of nitrogen:

KEY CONSIDERATIONS

When evaluating nitrogen needs, the key factors to consider are cost, storage space, safety, reliability of supply, logistical issues and more recently, the environmental impact. With truck-based delivery being costly, unreliable, and not environmentally friendly, many industries are now turning to on-site nitrogen generation.

ON-SITE GENERATION

An on-site solution removes the need for transportation and storage, whilst at the same time reducing cost. Nitrogen is readily available in the atmosphere making up 78% of the air we breathe. By extracting the other gasses – oxygen 21%, argon 0.93%, carbon dioxide 0.04%, water vapour and tiny amounts of other gasses, we are left with pure nitrogen, in ready supply.Nitrogen generators are available in many sizes to suit different applications. The skid utilises pressure swing adsorption PSA.

Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA)

PSA traps oxygen from the compressed air stream using adsorption – when molecules bind themselves to an adsorbent. The oxygen molecules attach to a carbon molecular sieve (CMS). This happens in two separate pressure vessels, each filled with a CMS, that switch between the separation process and the regeneration process.
